Sarawak A territory on the island of Borneo, it was ceded by the Sultan of Brunei to a wealthy British adventurer, Sir James Brooke, in 1841, and remained in the Brooke family until Japanese occupation (1942–5). In 1946 it became a British Crown Colony. Despite Indonesian claims for the territory, which led to the Confrontation (Konfrontasi), the majority of its population opted for entry into the Federation of Malaysia in 1963.
