Salò, Republic of

Salò, Republic of (Italian Social Republic) The northern Italian Fascist republic (1943–5) with its headquarters at Salò, on Lake Garda. It was governed by Mussolini once he had been freed from imprisonment by the Germans. Utterly dependent on the German military and the extreme wings of the Fascist movement as his power base, Mussolini ruled with considerable brutality to compensate for absent popular support until the republic collapsed in April 1945.
