Rundstedt, Gerd von (b. 12 Dec. 1875, d. 24 Feb. 1953). German field marshal 1940–5 He was recalled from retirement in 1939 to lead the German attack on Poland and France. In 1941 he was dismissed after his failure to meet Hitler's targets for the invasion of the Soviet Union, but reinstalled to command the German army in France. After D-Day, he was dismissed again in July 1944, to be reinstated two months later to lead the Ardennes offensive. He was finally discharged in March 1945.
