Restitution Agreement (10 Sept. 1952) An agreement reached between West Germany and Israel in which the former paid survivors of the Holocaust living in Israel 3 billion marks in compensation. Similar agreements were reached with representatives of Jewish survivors outside Israel. On 29 June 1956, compensation was extended to all victims of the Nazi regime. In contrast, East Germany refused to accept any responsibility for the atrocities of the Third Reich.
