Red Cross, International An international aid organization founded by the Swiss Henri Dunant in 1863, after he had witnessed the Battle of Solferino (1859). Its guidelines were laid down in the
Geneva Convention (1864), in which it committed itself to the impartial care of wounded in battle under the sign of the red cross against a white background, an inversion of the Swiss flag. Its mandate was extended in a number of further conventions. It helped in wars and afflictions throughout the century, on the basis of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntarism, unity, and universality. Its international headquarters remained in Geneva, where it co-ordinated the activities of 177 national Red Cross (or Red Crescent in Muslim countries) organizations.
