Rainbow Warrior Name of the ship belonging to the environmental organization
Greenpeace, which was blown up on 10 July 1985 in Auckland Harbour as it was preparing to set sail for
French Polynesia in order to protest against nuclear testing at the Mururoa Atoll. One photographer was killed in the incident. The revelation that the two culprits captured by the New Zealand police were agents of the French secret service forced the resignation of the head of the secret service and of the Minister of Defence, Charles Hernu, despite initial attempts at a cover-up. The French public were outraged at the tough prison sentences of ten years given to the agents, and proceeded to boycott New Zealand goods. The dispute was not resolved until the following year, when New Zealand handed over the agents in return for an official apology and French compensation payments.
