Peace Preservation Law (Japan) One of the most significant instruments of intellectual and political repression in prewar Japan. Enacted in 1925 to coincide with the introduction of universal male suffrage, it made illegal associations which had as their aim the alteration of Japan's imperial system and the system of private property. The law was used with great success to clamp down on left-wing and radical groups in Japan. After 1945 it was revoked as part of the US occupation's (
SCAP) attempts to dismantle the structures that had given rise to Japanese militarism.
