Pavelić, Ante (b. 14 July 1889, d. 28 Dec. 1959). Croatian Fascist leader Born in Bradina (Bosnia), he trained and practised as a lawyer in Zagreb, entering local politics in 1920. Elected to Parliament in 1927, he criticized the increasing centralization of government and its dominance by Serbs under Alexander I. He fled to Italy in 1929 when Alexander I assumed dictatorial powers. Here he became leader of the Ustase terrorist movement, and organized Alexander's murder in 1934. As head of the Fascist Independent State of Croatia 1941–5 he was responsible for brutal atrocities against both Jews and Orthodox Serbs. He went into hiding in 1945 and then escaped to Argentina, where he founded an Ustase government-in-exile. He died in Madrid.
