Gaulle, would not be opposed to Algerian independence as a means to end the
Algerian War of Independence. Led by
Salan and a group of French army officers, it staged an unsuccessful revolt in Algiers, as well as carrying out several bomb attacks in mainland France. Its greatest challenge to the new political order of the French Fifth Republic came, however, with its abortive attempt to assassinate the President himself, whose car was machine-gunned in March 1962. Salan was captured in Algiers the following month, and after further arrests the OAS gradually disintegrated.
