National Security Council (USA) An integral part of the national security architecture of the USA, the NSC was founded by the 1947 National Security Act which also established the CIA and the US Department of Defense. It advises the President and his staff on all matters of concern to national security, foreign or domestic, and includes the President, his adviser on national security, the Secretaries of State and Defense, and the Vice-President, as well as the Chairperson of the Joint Chiefs. In practice, it is represented by the National Security Advisor to the President. It has a staff of over 1,000 people committed to research and analysis but also capable of acting as agents beyond the purview of the CIA. The Council played a key role in the Cuban Missile Crisis and the Iran–Contra Affair.
