Mutesa II, Sir Edward Frederick William Walugembe

Mutesa II, Sir Edward Frederick William Walugembe (b. 19 Nov. 1924, d. 21 Nov. 1969). Kabaka of Buganda 1939–66; President of Uganda 1962–6 He attended King's College, Budu. He succeeded his father as Kabaka of the Buganda people while still a minor, but only became active in the affairs of state after completing his studies at Cambridge. Although at first unpopular because of his exuberant lifestyle, he became a national hero for standing up to the British and their plans for an eastern African federation. As his endorsement became necessary for political success, Obote formed an alliance with him, whereupon he became Uganda's first President. He now occupied a dual ro tribe, which enabled Obote to depose him and take up the presile as President of all of Uganda, and as leader of the territory of the Buganda within it. His sympathies lay with hisdency himself. He wrote his autobiography, Desecration of my Kingdom (1967), in exile in London. He died of alcohol poisoning.
