Murray, John Hubert Plunkett

Murray, John Hubert Plunkett (b. 29 Dec. 1869, d. 27 Feb. 1940). Australian colonial administrator of Papua New Guinea 1908–40 Born in Sydney, he graduated from Oxford and was called to the Bar in 1886. A Crown prosecutor in Sydney from 1896, he became chief judicial officer of New Guinea. As administrator he brought most of Papua New Guinea under Australian control. He was particularly notable, however, for his relatively liberal and enlightened treatment of the native population, who he argued would accept Australian rule only if they received just treatment.
