Marshall, John Thurgood (b. 2 July 1908, d. 24 Jan. 1993). US Supreme Court Justice 1967–91 Born in Baltimore, Maryland, the great-grandson of a slave, he was a brilliant student, having graduated second in his class at Howard University. This followed his rejection from the University of Maryland on racial grounds. As the chief lawyer of the
NAACP from 1939, he argued its case in
Brown v. Topeka. President
Kennedy appointed him to the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York in 1961, and he became Solicitor-General under Lyndon
Johnson. Johnson appointed him as the first African American US Supreme Court Justice. He was a liberal judge, chiefly concerned with the active protection of the poor through the Constitution.
