Mannix, Daniel (b. 4 Mar. 1864, d. 6 Nov. 1963). Archbishop of Melbourne 1917–63 Born in Co. Cork (Ireland), he attended St Patrick's seminary at Maynooth, where he became professor of moral theology (1895) and president (1903). Appointed coadjutor Archbishop of Melbourne in 1913, he soon became the best-known and most controversial clergyman in Australia, mainly because of his political involvement. He vociferously opposed
Hughes's conscription campaigns during World War I and supported Irish independence. He sought to enhance Catholic influence through the
Australian Labor Party (
ALP). In 1957 he broke with the ALP and supported the
Democratic Labor Party, accusing the former of
Communism.
