Luxemburg, Rosa (b. 5 Mar. 1870, d. 15 Jan. 1919). Co-founder of the German Communist Party Born in Russian Poland, she acquired German citizenship and entered the German
SPD (Social Democratic Party) in 1898. From 1907 to 1914 she taught at the Socialist Party school in Berlin. She was hostile to
Bernstein's revisionism, urging instead a revolution through the instrument of the general strike. At the same time, against
Lenin she insisted on a more democratic variety of
Communism. With K.
Liebknecht she opposed World War I and founded the
Spartakist Group to that end in 1916. She was murdered by members of the
Freikorps when she led a rising of Spartakist workers in the streets of Berlin.
