Kosice Attack (26 June 1941) Even though Hungary had joined in the German attack on Yugoslavia in World War II, Hungary saw no reason to join in Hitler's attack on the USSR on 22 June 1941. This changed when three unmarked aircraft attacked the towns of Kosice and Munkács. The aeroplanes were sent there to provoke the Hungarians into war, which is, in fact, what happened. The Hungarian government assumed the aeroplanes were from the Soviet Union and, following this ostensibly unprovoked attack, duly declared war on 27 June 1941.
