Konaré, Alpha Oumar

Konaré, Alpha Oumar (b. 1946). President of Mali, 1992–2002 Educated in Mali and Warsaw, Poland, where he received a doctorate in history. He returned to Mali, and in 1978 became Minister of Youth, Culture, and Sports under Moussa Traoré. He resigned from Traoré's increasingly corrupt government in 1980, and in 1992 he was elected President under the new Constitution. He won high domestic and international praise for stabilizing the country's political and economic system, and for creating a relatively vibrant public sphere. He was barred by the Constitution from running a third time for office.
