Kautsky, Karl (b. 16 Oct. 1854, d. 17 Oct. 1938). Marxist thinker Born in Prague, he joined the Austrian Social Democrats while a student in Vienna. He lived with Engels in London (1885–90), after whose death he became the main interpreter of
Marxism. Together with Eduard
Bernstein he later wrote the Erfurt Programme of 1891, which committed the German
Social Democratic Party to Marxism, though he came to criticize Bernstein's revisionism and his undoctrinaire pragmatism. He vehemently opposed
Lenin's development of
Marxism-Leninism in Russia. From Germany, he moved back to Vienna in 1924, from where he emigrated to Amsterdam following the
Anschluss.
