Kapp Putsch (13–17 Mar. 1920) After the German government disbanded further army and
Freikorps units to comply with the Treaty of
Versailles, one of the units affected marched on Berlin and declared its leader, Wolfgang Kapp (b. 1858, d. 1922), Chancellor. The government, forced to flee to Dresden and then Stuttgart, called a general strike which forced the insurrectionists to give up. The Kapp Putsch revealed the refusal of the army to defend the new German democracy against a coup from the military right, a fundamental source of weakness of the Weimar Republic throughout its existence.
