Jumayyil, Pierre

Jumayyil, Pierre (b. 1905, d. 1984). Lebanese politician Born in Beirut, he was educated there and in France, and became a pharmacist. Impressed by European Fascist movements at the time, in 1936 he founded the Phalanges Libanaises, a paramilitary organization to protect the Maronite Christian community. It was opposed to the growing pan-Arabism in Lebanon, and developed increasingly a political wing. In the civil war of 1958, he supported Chamoun against the pro-Nasser rebels. His support was important to the relative calm that accompanied successive presidencies, though from 1970 his influence in Lebanese politics declined, and was taken up by his sons, Bashir and Amin Jumayyil.
