John Paul I (Albino Luciani) (b. 17 Oct. 1912, d. 28 Sept. 1978). Pope 1978 The Patriarch of Venice since 1969, he was made a cardinal in 1973. The election of the ‘smiling Pope’ raised many hopes for a reformist and liberal papacy, which were dashed by his sudden death only thirty-three days after his election.
