International Brigades International groups of volunteers fighting for the Spanish Republic in the Spanish Civil War. After some foreigners volunteered to fight in a war that appeared to represent the growing confrontation between Communism and Fascism, their presence was increasingly valued and promoted by the Popular Front government. Consisting of three-quarters Communists, they were filled by a total of almost 60,000 combatants, drawn from over fifty nations. A majority were working people, though the Brigades became best-known through the participation of writers and other intellectuals, such as W. H. Auden, George Orwell, and Ernest Hemingway, whose book For Whom the Bell Tolls remains perhaps the best representation of the horrors faced by members of the International Brigades in particular, and of the Civil War in general. In 1996, Spain honoured the surviving members of the International Brigades by granting them Spanish citizenship.
