Halsey, William Frederick (b. 30 Oct. 1882, d. 16 Aug. 1959). US admiral Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1904, served in World War I, and rose steadily to the rank of admiral. In 1941, when he was commander of the Pacific Fleet aircraft carriers, he and his fleet were fortunately out of harbour when the Japanese attacked
Pearl Harbor. In 1942 he led a spectacular raid against the Japanese-occupied Marshall and Gilbert Islands, and during the campaign of the Solomon Islands he was given command of the South Pacific area. In October 1944, he commanded the US 3rd Fleet at the battle of
Leyte Gulf, the largest naval engagement in the Pacific up to that time. In 1945 he led the seaborne bombing offensive against Japanese cities. He retired from the navy in 1947.
