Guam A Pacific island in Micronesia. A US territory since 1898, it was an unincorporated territory governed by the US navy until 1950, except for the period 1941–4, when it was occupied by the Japanese. Civilian rule was established in an Organic Act of 1950, and in 1971 it received its first elected governor, followed by a non-voting delegate to the US House of Representatives in 1972. It became autonomous in 1982. From 1995, it was headed by a Democrat Governor, Carl Gutierrez, but in the 2000 elections the Republicans gained a narrow majority in parliament.
