Geisel, Ernesto (b. 3 Aug. 1907, d. 12 Sept. 1996) President of Brazil 1974–9 Born in Bento Gonçalves (Rio Grande do Sul), he enlisted in the Brazilian army and in 1930 helped bring Vargas to power, continuing to support him until 1945. In 1964 he formed part of the military junta which took over the government. The chief of the military cabinet 1964–7, he was president of the supreme military court 1967–9. As President of Brazil from 1974, he appreciated the popular dissatisfaction with the regime and sought to reconcile the public through concessions such as a relaxation of censorship. Despite his promises for a return to democracy, however, he imposed his successor, Figueiredo, upon the military and the whole country.
