Free Officers

Free Officers (Egypt) A secret army organization led by Nasser, which aimed to overthrow the corrupt King Farouk I and to free Egypt from British imperial influence. It emerged after World War II, though the group widened its appeal when the country's weakness became apparent through its humiliating defeat in the war against newly independent Israel (1948–9), when it was the first country to sue for peace. The actual date of its successful coup on 22–3 July 1952 was determined by its fear of discovery after the appointment of a new War Minister by King Farouk I.
