Farinacci, Roberto (b. 18 Oct. 1892, d. 28 Apr. 1945). Italian Fascist He gained a degree in law and then became politically active as a moderate and pragmatic socialist. A supporter of Italy's entry into World War I, he co-founded the Fascist movement in 1919 and organized the Fascist party in and around Cremona, which became his subsequent power base. Since Mussolini detested him personally and feared that his extremist ideas would offend the old Italian order which he tried to accommodate, Farinacci only gained a brief spell in office as the party's general secretary, 1925–6. After 1936 he supported an alliance with Germany and later advocated anti-Semitic policies in Italy. He voted against Mussolini's dismissal by the Fascist Grand Council on 25 July 1943, and loyally served him in the Republic of Salò. He was captured and executed by partisans.
