European Defence Community

European Defence Community (EDC) A proposed European supranational army which was designed to overcome European (and particularly French) fears of West German rearmament. It was established by the Treaty of Paris on 27 May 1952 by the six members of the ECSC, but in August 1954 the French Parliament failed to ratify the treaty so that the EDC never came into being. None the less, in response to British and American pressure France overcame its fears of German rearmament to the extent that West Germany was admitted into NATO less than a year later, in May 1955.
