Eupen-Malmédy A German-speaking territory of around 1,000 km
2 (390 sq. miles), it was part of the Austrian Netherlands until it became part of Prussia under the terms of the Congress of Vienna (1814). After World War I the prosperous area was awarded to Belgium in 1919. In 1940–5, it formed part of
Nazi Germany. It was finally confirmed as Belgian territory in a German-Belgian agreement of 1956. The region was part of the Walloonia region, which from 2001 became a federal state within Belgium. Within Walloonia, however, Eupen-Malmédy maintained considerable autonomy with its own government.
