Entebbe Raid

Entebbe Raid On 27 June 1976, an Air France aircraft was hijacked and forced to land at the Ugandan airport of Entebbe. The hijackers of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine demanded the release of over fifty Arab terrorists in return for the release of their (mostly Jewish) hostages. On 3 July 1976, in a spectacular raid an Israeli commando unit under the command of Barak was flown in from Israel and made a surprise attack on the airport. It freed the hostages and returned them to Israel, despite vigorous attacks from the Ugandan air force. The raid humiliated Idi Amin, who had supported the terrorists, and boosted Israel's military confidence, still badly shaken from the Yom Kippur War. It served also as a reminder of Israel's vulnerability, at a time when Western opinion showed greater recognition of Palestinian grievances.
