English, Bill (b. 30 Dec. 1961), Opposition Leader, New Zealand, 2001– Born in Wallace on South Island, he attended St. Patrick's College in Silverstream, before obtaining a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Otago University and a BA in English Literature at Victoria University, Wellington. He returned to his home town to take up farming, but in 1987 he became a political analyst in Wellington, and in 1990 he was elected as MP for Wallace (now renamed Clutha-Southland). He joined the Cabinet in 1996 as Minister for Crown Health Enterprises and Associate Minister of Education. Later that year, he became Minister of Health, and in 1999 he served as Minister of Finance and Minister of Revenue. In 2002 he led his party to an unprecedented election defeat against Helen
Clark. He was replaced as party leader by the fiscally conservative Don Brash.
