Eichmann, Karl Adolf (b. 19 Mar. 1906, d. 31 May 1962). Nazi war criminal Originally a salesman from Solingen (
Ruhr District), he joined the
SS security service under
Heydrich in 1934. In 1939, he was put in charge of Jewish affairs and became one of the central figures responsible for the ‘final solution’, the mass killings of Jews in
concentration camps, begun in 1941. In 1945, he fled from US captivity to Argentina, where the Israeli security service, Mossad, traced him and deported him to Israel in 1960. In one of the most prominent trials against Nazi criminals since the
Nuremberg trials, he was sentenced to death and hanged. For many observers, including Hannah Arendt, Eichmann became the epitome of the unrelenting Nazi perpetrator feigning powerlessness in the face of superior orders.
