Dutra, Eurico Gaspar (b. 18 May 1885, d. 17 June 1974). President of Brazil 1946–51 A conservative general in the Brazilian Army, he was an early supporter of Vargas and served as Minister of War until 1945, when he participated in the coup to depose him. He was elected President with the support of the nationalist right-wing Social Democratic Party (Partido Social Democrático) in 1946. He had a more democratic Constitution adopted during his first year in office and promoted economic nationalism and industrialization. Despite the structural problems emerging in Brazilian politics and society, his government was marked by relative quiet since the country was still enjoying the prosperity obtained during World War II.
