Duncan Smith, Iain (b. April 1954). Leader of the Conservative Party (UK), 2001–2003 Educated at Sandhurst, he became an officer in the army, and in 1987 he entered Parliament as the
Conservative MP for Bradford West. In 1992 he was elected for the safe seat of Chingford, and in the ensuing Parliament he became one of the most prominent Conservative opponents to John
Major's efforts to keep party unity on the question of the
euro. After Labour's election victory in 1997, he was a relatively insconspicuous MP. Following another disastrous election result for the Conservatives, he became leader in 2001 because of the party's aversion to the two front-runners, Michael Portillo and Kenneth Clarke. Duncan Smith's uninspiring leadership and his lacklustre shadow cabinet failed to make any initial impact on the electorate. Following a leadership challenge he was replaced as party leader by Michael Howard.
