Dobrudja The disputed Black Sea littoral at the mouth of the Danube. It became part of the
Ottoman Empire in 1417, but in 1878 the northern half became part of Romania. Meanwhile, the south was claimed by the newly independent state of Bulgaria, but was annexed by Romania in 1913. During World War I, it witnessed heavy fighting between Romanian and Austrian troops. Briefly part of Bulgaria in 1918, it was annexed again by Romania in 1919. In 1940 it reverted to Bulgaria, whose sovereignty over the southern part of Dobrudja was confirmed in 1947.
