Democratic Party of Japan Created in 1996, it consisted of many former members of the Social Democratic Party (
Socialist Party) as well as other oppositional splinter groups. It sought to provide a more effective opposition against what it considered the increasingly corrupt rule by the ruling
Liberal Democratic Party. It vowed to promote a transparent and just government, social fairness, pacifism, and the devolution of power to the local level. The DP quickly developed into Japan's largest opposition party, gaining 127 seats in the 2000 elections to the House of Representatives, and 177 (out of 480) in 2003.
