Chisholm, Shirley Anita (b. 30 Nov. 1924, d. 1 Jan. 2005). US politician First African American woman to enter the House of Representatives. Born in Brooklyn, New York, she studied at Brooklyn College, where she received a BA, and Columbia University, from which she obtained an MA. Running as a
Democrat, Chisholm entered the New York State assembly as a Brooklyn member in 1965. Four years later she entered the US House of Representatives, and sought the Democrat presidential nomination in 1972. Despite winning the endorsement of the
Black Panthers she picked up little support, and remained a member of Congress. She retired from public life in 1983.
