Chetniks Serbian nationalist guerrillas who fought to protect the Serbian minorities in
Macedonia in the late nineteenth century. The name was then adopted by nationalist guerrillas fighting initially with British support during World War II against the German and Italian occupying forces. Their operations were concentrated in
Bosnia and the Serb-inhabited areas of
Croatia. However, they became embroiled in a bitter struggle with
Tito's Communist partisans, in which they were overcome towards the end of 1944. Once Croatia moved towards independence from around 1990, new Serbian guerrilla units formed under the name, fighting against Croatian control of areas with a substantial Serb population.
