Central Powers

A Dictionary of Contemporary World History | 2004 | | © A Dictionary of Contemporary World History 2004, originally published by Oxford University Press 2004. (Hide copyright information) Copyright

Central Powers The term used for the co-belligerents in World War I, Germany and Austria-Hungary, as they were engulfed by their opponents, Russia to the east, and Britain, France, Belgium, and Luxemburg to the west. It is often extended to include their partners, the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.
