Cassin, René (5 Oct. 1887–20 Feb. 1976). French politician Born in south-western France, he became a professor of law in Lille (1920) and then in Paris (1929). He was a French delegate to the
League of Nations, 1924–38. He joined de
Gaulle and became a prominent member of the
Free French. He was a member of the Council of State (1944–60), but is best remembered as the principal author of the
UN Declaration of
Human Rights in 1948. He became a member of the European Court of Human Rights in 1959, and was its President 1965–8. In 1968, he was awarded the
Nobel Peace Prize.
