Campbell, Avril Kim

Campbell, Avril Kim (b. 10 Mar. 1947). Prime Minister of Canada 1993 Born at Port Alberni (British Columbia), she studied political science and law at the University of British Columbia and the London School of Economics. She became a member of the provincial legislative assembly in 1986, entering the House of Commons for the Progressive Conservative Party in 1988. She became Minister of Justice and Attorney-General in 1990, and in 1993 became Minister of Defence. Following Mulroney's resignation, she won the party leadership in summer 1993 and became Prime Minister, the first woman in Canadian history to do so and, apart from brief intermissions by Turner and Clark, the first person from outside Quebec since 1968. She was unsuccessful at reviving the party for the general elections on 25 October 1993, plunging it into deeper unpopularity, because of her disorganized campaign and unguarded comments. The party's parliamentary strength fell from 154 to just two seats and she lost her own seat to the Liberal Party.
