Calwell, Arthur Augustus (b. 28 Aug. 1896, d. 8 July 1973). Australian politician Born and educated in Melbourne, he joined the state civil service of Victoria in 1913. He joined the Labor Party in 1914 and advanced through its ranks to become president of the Victorian Labor Party in 1931. Entering federal parliament in 1940, he became Minister for Information in 1943, but his most important legacy came from his time as the first Minister for Immigration (1945–9).
