Calwell, Arthur Augustus (b. 28 Aug. 1896, d. 8 July 1973). Australian politician Born and educated in Melbourne, he joined the state civil service of Victoria in 1913. He joined the
Labor Party in 1914 and advanced through its ranks to become president of the Victorian Labor Party in 1931. Entering federal parliament in 1940, he became Minister for Information in 1943, but his most important legacy came from his time as the first Minister for Immigration (1945–9). Given the pressing need for immigrants, he sought to preserve the traditional emphasis on a ‘White’ Australia, through aggressive campaigns to attract not only British, but for the first time also continental and especially southern European immigration. The deputy leader of the Australian Labor Party from 1951, he served as its leader (in opposition), 1960–7.
