Cabral, Amilcar (b. 12 Sept. 1924, d. 20 Jan. 1973). Guinea-Bissau revolutionary Born in Bafata (Guinea-Bissau) of a father from Cape Verde and a mother from Guinea-Bissau. He studied agronomy at Lisbon University and entered the colonial government of Guinea-Bissau in 1950. On 19 September 1956, he founded the Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e de Cabo Verde (PAIGC, African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde). He campaigned for the unification of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde. Cabral was adamant that the struggle for independence should not only lead to political decolonization, but also to the end of foreign control of culture, society, and economy. He worked actively for the coordination of independence movements in Portuguese-controlled African countries. Following his assassination his brother, Luìs, became the country's first President.
