Bulganin, Nikolai Aleksandrovich (b. 11 June 1895, d. 26 Feb. 1975). Soviet statesman Born in Nijni Novgorod, he fought in World War I and joined the
Communist Party at the time of the
Russian Revolutions in 1917. He contributed to the
Russian Civil War as a member of the secret police,
Cheka. He was chairman of the Moscow City Soviet (i.e. mayor), 1931–7, and became Deputy Prime Minister in 1938. He held a number of high political offices in the
Red Army during World War II, and in 1944 was appointed Deputy Defence Minister. He became Defence Minister in 1947, and Deputy Prime Minister in 1949. His actual influence was relatively small during these years, as his career was more a factor of his faithful execution of
Stalin's wishes. He became Prime Minister under
Khrushchev in 1955, but in 1957 fell from grace for his close links with the ‘anti-party’ opposition to Khrushchev under
Molotov and
Malenkov. He was dismissed from the Presidium in 1958, worked for the Stavropol Economic Council, and retired in 1960.
