Bradley, Omar Nelson (b. 12 Feb. 1893, d. 8 Apr. 1981). US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff 1949–53 Born in Clark, Missouri, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1915. He did not see action in World War I, but he rose steadily in rank to become commander of US forces in Tunisia and Sicily in World War II. He went on to command the US land forces at
D-Day and the subsequent US advance through France. After the
Ardennes campaign, as commander of the 12th Army Group of some one million men he swept through Europe to link up with Soviet forces on the Elbe in 1945. From 1948, he was responsible for the build-up of
NATO and for formulating US global military strategy. He supported the US involvement in the
Korean War. However, he deeply distrusted General
MacArthur, whose plans to take the Korean War into China he famously criticized as leading to ‘the wrong war, at the wrong place, at the wrong time, with the wrong enemy’.
