Bloc Québecois, BQ (Canada) A party founded by Bouchard in 1990 to represent the Quebec separatist movement in the federal parliament. Supported by the Parti Québecois (PQ), it gained 54 seats in the 1993 elections. Owing to the dismal electoral performance of the Progressive Conservative Party, it became the official opposition, which gave it an extra platform to campaign for the independence of Quebec. Together with the PQ, it presented the issue of sovereignty in a referendum in the province in 1995, which it narrowly lost. It lost its status as the official opposition in 1997, when it gained 44 seats. Led by Gilles Duceppe from 1997, it lost a further six seats in the 2000 federal elections, when it gained just under 40 per cent of the vote in Québec, almost 5 per cent less than the Liberal Party.
