Batista y Zaldívar, Fulgencio (b. 16 Jan. 1901, d. 6 Aug. 1973). Cuban dictator 1933–40; President 1940–4, 1952–8 A professional soldier, he led a successful revolt against President Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in 1933 and subsequently determined Cuban politics until 1958. He governed through a series of puppet regimes until 1940, when he took power directly. He continued to exert a decisive influence on Cuban politics behind the scenes after his official retirement into exile in 1944. In 1952, he returned to lead another military coup to re-establish a one-party dictatorship. His corrupt and brutal methods cost him the support of the middle classes and ultimately of the army, so that he was deposed by
Castro and fled to exile in the Dominican Republic on 31 December 1958.
