Babangida, Ibrahim Gbadamosi

Babangida, Ibrahim Gbadamosi (b. 17 Aug. 1941). President of Nigeria 1985–93 Of the Fulani people, he was born in Minna, and received secondary school education. After military training in India, the UK, and the USA, he rose through the ranks of the Nigerian army to become Chief of Staff in 1984. He became President after initiating a successful military coup on 27 August 1985. He tried to achieve political stability through establishing constitutional change to suit the various ethnic groupings, but he was unable to accept the consequence of this process, when he lost the presidential elections to Abiola. Annulling the elections, he set up a government under Adegunle Oladeinde Shonekan, until both were forced into exile by another military coup.
