Arcos Raid

Arcos Raid A raid on the offices of a British-registered Soviet trading company, Arcos Ltd. It took place on 12 May 1927, with 200 police officers searching the company's premises in London, on suspicion that the company was a front for Communist subversion, and that it was holding a British army signals manual. No evidence of subversion was found, however. Still, partly to cover Baldwin's embarrassment over the incident, diplomatic relations with the Soviet Union were broken off in what marked the height of British insecurity about the perceived spread of Communism following the General Strike. Relations were only restored by MacDonald's Labour government in October 1929.
