Arbenz Guzmán, Jacobo (b. 14 Sept. 1913, d. 27 Jan. 1971). President of Guatemala 1951–4 Son of a Swiss immigrant, he joined the army and in 1944 co-sponsored a military coup, after which he joined a junta to oversee the establishment of a democracy. As President, he granted unprecedented political and civic freedoms. He carried out cautious economic reforms, mainly heeding the advice of the
World Bank. However, the land reform that followed, and especially the expropriation of lands held by the powerful United Fruit Company (UFC), triggered the open hostility of the US government (its Secretary of State,
Dulles, was a shareholder of the UFC). With US help, a group of insurgents began an uprising, while air raids undertaken by
CIA pilots induced the army to depose him.
